Spring is here…a time for new beginnings. We want to share the new beginnings your generous funds have already helped to provide for children and families in Cité Soleil, Haiti this year.
Waterborne illnesses in the impoverished community of Cité Soleil are widespread and a frequent cause of childhood death. Access to safe, clean water and the adoption of safe hygiene practices is essential to improved health, education and futures.
The Cité Soleil project was initiated in response to community demand. The people want change.Once completed, it will reach 1,000 homes, serving over 5,700 children and their families.
Our work began in December 2014. We have made great progress:
- 362 families (795 residents) have received hygiene training, incl. hand washing, sanitation, and safe water use and storage. They also learned about basic filter use and maintenance.
- 50 Community Agents* have completed a 5-day intensive course focused on hygiene, sanitation, waterborne disease, household water treatment and the cycle of water. They also learned filter installation, maintenance and troubleshooting. They are ready to support their
*Note: Community Agents are volunteers, committed to providing enhanced support to families to ensure sustained use of filters and adoption of safe hygiene practices. They receive continued support from PWW staff.
- 175 biosand filters are installed, providing safe water to ~ 1,000 children and family members!

Our goal is to complete the community trainings and filter installations for all 1,000 families by July of this year. To meet this goal, we need to raise an additional $10,000. We are so close!
